So ... Re my last post regarding how to attach the awning without tearing the material with the sliding door..... How do you repair a 12" gash ????

I would think its a case of sticking a patch of similar material about an 1" wider either side of the gash. If the material has grain, make sure it goes across the gap. then using some of the correct material glue pull the gash closed and glue on the patch on the inside. Make sure you use plenty of glue. You might want to tape the gash closed from the outside to hold it shut whilst glue dries. Also consider placing a hardback book over the patch possibly something on top of it. This will keep it nice and flat.

Find an old sailmaker - herringbone stitches. Admittedly they would be finer than the heavy canvas sails that I was taught to repair! But they were totally watertight when done correctly with the correct thread and beeswax.
I would never countenance glue for a repair such as that - sew a proper patch on and with the fancy stitches that you have on modern sewing machines you can close the tear perfectly. It would take me all of 20 minutes on my sewing machine. It would need re-proofing in that area afterwards.

I've got one down the road - he used to make sails for Thames barges. He's in the process of making me a new boat cover at the moment. Proper East Ender from London with a hernia from lugging rolls of canvas around but won't ease up at all unless it is for a yarn then you could be there for hours!
