Replacement engine.Options ?

Post by dwt25 »

Hi my 2 Lr 1981 cu air cooled engine needs to be replaced. local garages will not fix only replace. Best quote £2.5k. For recon engine fitted. My question is this, is there an alternative engine that would be suitable / cheaper ?
Kind Regards

What's wrong with it? How do they know it's not fixable?

Like Jim says, what's up with it ? The CU engine is so simple there is not much that cannot be fixed. Heads = simple. Piston & Barrel set = simple. Crank and bearings = a bit more work, but it's all pretty basic engineering.

To answer your question though, I know of no other engine that will fit without a huge amount of other work (because it is air cooled). There are plenty of places that will fix air-cooled VW engines, someone will be along soon to name them (I am a water cooled type, so cannot quote places for air-cooled work).

It'll be a lifter, the sound comes from the crank area and is often mis-diagnosed as something worse.

I've had a valve stem snap on one head and a valve seat break up on the other. Both times I farmed the work out to a VW garage in Cornwall because I was too busy (lazy) to fit a new head myself. Both times the bill was less than £300 and they did some other bits & pieces at the same time.

Other than the noise what other symptoms have you got pointing towards a dying engine?
