Engine poorly 1.6td

Post by Jakemate »

Well after replacing head gasket in December after a cracked head I've had a few months of happy motoring until yesterday when I noticed my rev counter had stopped working, then a second later my batt light came on so I knew I had lost the alt belt. The temp gauge was 3/4 up and light flashing.

I travelled 100m or so then stopped the engine on rolled down the hill to my house (standing on brakes) and pulled onto the drive.

I took the engine cover off and the belt had gone, alt and water pump spin freely so not sure what happened there.

I noticed the aux water pump was running so decided to leave it to cool down.

I left it an hour and went out to start it, it now sounds like a tractor but starts and recs fine.

It's almost like the exhaust manifold is blowing but my gut says the engine has cooked and the head is blowing but I'll double check with a compression check later.

It's so disheartening after putting in all the work on the engine :(

Anyway, if anyone has an aaz lump I'd be interested as if the head has gone again Ive decided to put a 1.9 in.

Unless another lump is an option, I'm very good on vehicle electrics so wiring in ecu's etc is not a problem.

Just had listen this morning, sound like heavy diesel knocking, no water or oil loss ! Maybe not head gasket ?

Hi
Looked on ebay last week and somebody selling 80,000 mile AAZ with known history complete for £450. Don't no if its still for sale , but worth a look.

First check the cam and pump timing, then with the engine ticking over undo the nut on each of the injectors and retighten [in turn, one at a time]..
Good luck.
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Yep the cam timing has slipped !

Hopefully it hasn't slipped too much, will find out tomorrow as I'm going to borrow mates timing kit to retune cam and pump.

Not sure how the alt/waterpump belt destroyed itself as it was pretty new, maybe a jolt caused it to lock up but I'm thinking something locked up somewhere !

All done, thanks to everyone who replied.
Cam timing slipped on the shaft a teeny bit, good job it was only a bit too.
All retimed and pump lift set to 1mm.
I think the alternator threw the belt, it got snagged around the crank pulley and jolted the cam belt causing the slip.

But all running sweet again now :)
