quick rust q (windscreen)
Got screen out this morning and found genarally in good nick, certainly no holes, so a quick fettle and it can go back in. I have found though that the inside of the 2 lips that form the bodywork flange for glass is a bit rusty. see piccy, hopefully below. I'm not sure how to attack this- seam sealer between the inner and outer lips, rub back as best I can and cover (not easy to get at where it is). Any help gratefully received. Oh, and glass has to back in tonight... TIA, Bri

That needs cutting away, and replaced with fresh steel

Re: quick rust q (windscreen)
if the glass has to go back in tonight, rub it down best you can (without marking the dash!) get something on there to seal whats left (vactan or paint) and then prep to take the dash out at a later point id say.
Just my tuppence though

Re: quick rust q (windscreen)
Thanks for replies, and sorry for slow response. I was glad to find I didn't have any holes in the windscreen aperture, it was almost perfect under there. The rust on the inner lip was light so I rubbed it back a bit, phosphoric acidded it and POR15ed over that. Then covered it with 3M windscreen sealant. Bloody screen cracked while putting it in though, wasn't giving it much stick either, just unlucky I guess. £100 quid for new screen, fitted, wasn't bad though. Doesn't look like this was cause of my water in footwell, so back to the drawing board with that one! Cheers, Bri

Re: quick rust q (windscreen)
OP here! Rubber was from Heritage as recommended on here. Bottom half went in perfectly, but screen/seal was slightly proud of the aperture across the top, it was obvious that if I just carried on pulling the string out that the seal would 'miss' the lip. So, outside the van I went and applied a bit of pressure to the top of the screen to get it into the aperture a bit more, then crack- it went diagonally across one of the corners at the top. My son works for autoglass and he had given me advice, he couldn't believe it went. Guy who fitted replacement said best to slightly wet the seal and aperture (my son said should be alright without)- I left the cracked screen in exactly as it was when it went, he said it was looking good, probably just needed a bit of lube. I have fitted glass to my old T2 with JK seals and have absolutely battered it to get it in! I work for Pilkington and have spent time in Triplex- glass is weird stuff, sometimes it seems indestructible, other times it just breaks with no effort. Oh well, it cost me 100, hopefully the next person on here who does a screen is a little wiser from my experience. Bri

Re: quick rust q (windscreen)
ah ta for getting back to me,
ok just cos the guy works for a glass means not the earth, there are welders and welders as in any trade, but thats beside the point, seal from heritage ??? i had them from there and sent them back, supposed German quality ,?? what does that mean, they make better stuff than Brits or Poles or w.h.y. vewib are all i will personally fit unless its genuine oe.
no lube is needed fro the front screen, ok a little generic glass cleaner sometimes, but you main fault was you said you fitted the bottom first .... WRONG
when you cord the seal you form a loop on each of the vertical sides , then sit screen in hole,
sit on ns seat and have door open and with left hand press screen in and use cord to pull seal in, go up to corners then repeat other side then go back and go round corners a few inches repeat other side, then hop out with flat of hand gently thud the screen up the areas you have fitted then go across the top a bit and along the bottom a bit, if you have a mate great they can follow you outside and only WHERE NEEDED apply a bit of pressure behind you
as said less than a minute, no hammers no lube no struggle.i been fitting them 40 odd years and my fella freelance (ex autoglass) 30 years.
never broke one yet this way

Re: quick rust q (windscreen)
I do them exactly the same as that. If theres a prob getting it in it'll be a repair made that isn't true, or its a sort of 'wannabe' seal - only they never are. As said, if its the right seal it almost drops in by itself and you can definately do it single handed if its a decent rubber. You may need to superglue the edge of any bits of headling that are hanging down so they get tucked in properly when the screen goes back in.
The situation was the same with bays. Right seal - dead easy. Wrong seal and you'll need an army and a bucket of K-Y jelly. I learnt once 19 years ago and never forgot it. Fit a seal that is as close to original as possible and never accept a lesser one. I don't actually remember anyone recommending Heritage seals (certainly not me and Mike) - only the ones from VW Emporium. We mention it quite a lot.
No idea if Heritage seals are any good but if they're like the JK ones, the screen seal bulges out instead of sitting flush and will (sadly) sometimes leak months later. Its such a faff getting it in, you run the risk of busting the screen too.
I actually do use a hammer (well, rubber mallet) just to make sure the rubber has gone in fully but even then I only tap very gently. Never had one that I fitted that didn't go in beautifully and first time.

Sorry, seal was from Emporium, brain fade. Thanks for follow up, I know what to do next time. Hopefully anyone else who read this will be a bit wiser than I was a couple of weeks ago and not have same probs. Cheers, Bri

Re: quick rust q (windscreen)
When I fitted my last screen I used a unknown seal I bought for a few quid of the guy I got my truck off...utter "bar-steward" to fit but didnt know there was a better option at the time...in the end I had a double sucker in the middle and a ratchet strap on pulling it in from the cab back wall...silicone spray all over the seal...and when it was nearly in I worked my way round the inside with plastic trim tools as the wire wouldn't flip the rubber...lots of bonking the glass and lube and finally it sat in its reveal...took a good few hours and some sweat...not going there again..but it didnae crack I'm pleased to say.
