Cracked Head - HELP

Post by dvenables »

Hello

I have a VW T25 with a 1.9 wasserboxer. I have only done about 100miles in it since buying it. It also happens to be my first T25... so all in all i am a novice.

The engine let go while i was driving it and fortunately it was just the head.. or so i thought. I have dropped the engine and taken both the heads off as i bought a full head kit. I fould the heads oily and once clean found 2 cracks across the valves on the RH head under the alternator. So apart from finding out i have a problem with the rings, i also have a damaged head. It does seem pointless doing a full rebuild if i have a damaged head. A cracked head is a dead head.. and repairs to these heads are unguaranteed and expensive.

So the help i need is .. if anyone knows someone who has repaired these heads and will proove the theory of a cracked head is a dead head wrong id love to know as my budget is limited. Or the more realistic option is can anyone point me in the direction of where i can get a second hand head as these are as rare as rocking horse **...

many thanks
Dudley

How big are the cracks? It's not unusual to have slight crackage tween the valves...
Which engine is it ? DF , DG, DH ?
Heads are available , previously enjoyed, place a wanted advert?
You'll be looking at £1200 for a recon engine from elite ,

hi

its a DG. I have tried to add pictures but it keeps on telling me they picture type is invalid.
to be honest i am not sure on what is concidered big in terms of cracks.
they run straight across the cylinders and one is slightly bigger than the other. the gap is about 0.5 mm

Hi Dudley

get a photobucket account, stick the pics on there and then select tge [IMG] link, copy and paste it into your post

if we cant see it its hard to comment

You say it gave way what do you mean, what were the symptoms?

i have cracked a head and but depending on where the crack is depends on what happens

You cant really repair acrack, you can buy new heads but they are expensive at £300+

They do come up on ebay 2nd hand from time to time

hi

well my technical term of let go is as follows..

i was driving down the road doing about 50 when i had a sudden loss of power and with this came a slight lerch. i took my foot off the accelerator and then put it back on and noticed a nice cloud of smoke bellowing out of the exhaust. i pulled over and opened the engine bay. the water was kettling and there was steam everywhere. i turned off and let the engine cool down. when i filled up the water and started it again there was steam/smoke coming out of the left exhaust.. i have a twin empi on the back. it sounded fine hence i thought it was the head that had gone. but i am not sure as when i was stripping it i found oil had been thrown up into the air filter and carb.
i have taken off both heads. the pistons look black but are fine. the heads were black and oily so my best guess is the rings have gone. once cleaned to a degree the one head looks fine and the other is cracked.

thanks

:ok

Why rebuild the bottom end?
its a whole lit harder to split the case if you dont need to

I strongly reccomend removing the pistons and liners to replace the lower liner seals but thats as far as id go unless you have good reason to split the case
