Unknown ticking noise at 3000-3500 RPM
Hi Everyone....
Been a while since I've been on here (the old girl's been behaving!).
I wonder if anyone has had anything like this...
My 2.1 injection Westy makes a funny ticking noise at between 3000-3500 RPM when warm. The engine is pulling nicely and no power loss at all. If you reduce the revs, it goes away. It's the same in all gears (I think, although haven't checked first). The sound is similar to what a solenoid makes when clicking on and off, so sounds electrical. It is random how often it clicks too, can be very rapid and then intermittent, and appears to be coming from the front of the van. I can't see anything obvious under the van or in the engine bay. We've done 200 miles since it started and no issues other than the clicking noise.
It has me vexed, although it doesn't appear to be troubling the old lady....
Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Phil

That is a good question which I can't answer until I try again! It certainly stops when the clutch is dipped and we're free wheeling. I'll have to rev it in the drive and get back to you...

Is it when the engine is pulling hard? I.e. Up hill in 3rd foot to the floor, or basically any gear foot to the floor?
Then when you ease off it goes?

It's at all powers as long as the revs are up. Definitely doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine but must be as it's only there when in gear and revving. Doesn't vary with weight of foot. I would liken the sound to hail hitting the windscreen if that helps? Engine is pulling perfectly!

I would say that's a CV joint clicking.

Interesting you should say that Kev... I've been getting a knocking going round corners when the van's cold which I think may be a CV joint issue. Can I ask why it would start clicking though? Is it something I can fix with a bit of lube or is it likely to be new cv joints required? The boots are both intact.
The knocking is a totally different sound...

You can certainly try to repack the gaiters with some good silicon grease.bitler1@gmail.com wrote:Interesting you should say that Kev... Thanks for the advice. Presumably it's just putting off the inevitable though? Any idea how much a reputable garage charges to do both cv joints?

If you put you location in your profile somebody might be able to answer that, regional prices can vary quite a bit.
