rock and roll beds

Hi all ive been looking into rock and roll bed recently and how much they cost new

volksmagic put me intouch with a guy called rusty lee, he is very reasonably priced/helpful/great quality!
He does 3/4 width, full width and custon
They are made from steel frame with wooden board pre cut on top

Do you have to build a bed box over the engine hatch to fit one of these?

Forgive my ignorance - as I have put on a previous post - I KNOW NOTHING!

I too am looking at a R&R bed. The van I am getting has rear belts fitted to the floor of the van but the R&R bed that is there is made of wood and falling apart. I was going to try and copy it with new wood but I am not convinced it would be deemed safe enough to pass an MOT as a rear seat. To be used as a proper seat during travel does it have to be a metal frame?

Doesn't have to be metal frame. Mine is wooden, has two seatbelts and is classed as travelling seats

It would however need to be sturdy and properly bolted to the chassis if being used as travelling seats

I think rustylee's beds do require the engine bay to be raised.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of this type of bed. Don't get me wrong - looks great and very well built (similar to the Volkswares metal frame ones), but it just seems like half a job... Because they couldn't be bothered designing a slightly different frame for split/bay and T25...

Waste of wood, not much storage space, more to move out of the way to get to engine lid etc...

This is just my personal opinion so don't shoot me some people may like the idea

I have been trawling through the various Forums looking for help but I am prob missing the obvious.

The van I am getting has some furniture in it but at the moment it is all loose.

It is a bit tatty so I was going to copy it with new wood. Now wood I can do, I am happy working with wood, my worry is - how on earth do I fix the wood to the van?

The interior of my Westy is all joined together with coaching bolts, and there's metal corner brackets bolted to the bed frame, and then big M8 or M10 bolts going through the vans floor (the hinges on the bed are also bolted to the top edge of the engine bay area)

Cheers - so basically - if I securely bolt the furniture together then an some point (or two) bolt through the floor then that will be fine?

What about high level storage i.e. Like little shelves above the window? Sorry if I sound dumb - but I am!

Jeff - it does say that, but its a general bed to fit all splits/bays/T25s

I'm quite confident that splits and bays have higher engine areas.

Can also tell from the picture, the mounting bracket that fits on the corner of the engine bay are about 3-4 inches below the surface of the bed... (which means the rear part would need to be raised to suit)

Have a look at the Volkswares beds on ebay, same mounting points/height etc, and says rear of van needs to be raised when fitting to T25

Sands - Not too sure about high level shelves etc, possibly some self tappers into the vehicle body, but probably wouldn't put too much weight on it lol

I'd re-use the existing rock and roll hinges in your van (as long as they're still serviceable?) and possibly use the falling apart base as a template.

Measure front kick-panel, side panels, base, hinge mounting positions etc. If you're handy with woodwork it shouldn't be too hard to re-make a seat/bed with some nice quality ply?

i am so frustrated that i cant get to grips with it yet - i will try and swing by the garage and have a look underneath the pile of wood in there!
