Overheating, heater doesn't work

Coolant gauge started rising last night, simultaneously heating stopped working. Easing off on the speed etc helped me nurse it home.

The water in the main tank was about an inch below minimum, the expansion tank was up to the brim.

One of the main hoses in the engine bay was changed recently, thoroughly bled, no sign of any leaks. I've been running it for a couple of weeks on plain water, no antifreeze (waiting til pay-day...).

I'm just about to switch it on and have another go at bleeding the rad, by running it until warmish on uphill; anything else to look for? 1.6n/a diesel.

I need to drive to Cardiff at 5pm...

when you bleed it make sure that the heater is set to hot to avoid any air lock

strange that you got no heat though if the van over heats normally thermo not opening you would still get heat as the heater runs on a separate line

could poss be a blockage or something up with the water pump not sending water around system

I did think I did that, but I'll double check now. If I don't find a big bubble I guess I'll have to flush the system. (Was hoping to leave that until the anti freeze went in)

Thanks. Any other ideas? It's run fine for several hundred miles since I changed the hose.

Just re-bled it, managed to get a little hiss of air, not much. Test run seemed okay, heater producing some heat - not sure if it's as hot as usual, mind. But it was definitely zero before. So, fingers crossed...

not sure about diesel engines but on my 2.1 i have three bleeding points one in the rear on top of thermo housing and one in the front on to of rad
and one under rear bench seat for heater

i would first flush the whole of your system or as much as you can bearing in mind you are going to refill with anti freeze later any way

open the bleeding points

and put heater on to max heat if you have a rear heater also put to max heat

fill rear bottle inside the engine bay untill it is full to brim

start engine set to fast idle water should go down slowly top ot up to brim go to bleeding point at at front and close once you see solid water with no bubble coming out

check other bleed points

top up rear tank and then top up the lower un presurised tank

then drive the thing unitil its properly warmed check that rad is hot and that thermo has opened correctly up then recheck bleed point carfully for air

when cooled down check rear bottle and top up if needed

you could lift the fron of van if you want slightly

Just back from Cardiff, up over the Black Mountains, not a place to break down in the middle of the night... Seems fine now.

I have a couple of subsidiary questions:

Any suggestions about where/how to flush system? I know to get a hose and wrap a cloth around it, and stick it somewhere...

Also, anyone know if I should be looking for bleed points on diesel engine/heater? (Just standard heater, in cab)

Thanks, I did check it earlier, looking for info on bleeding a diesel system, now notice there is also a reference to flushing
