Captains seat armrests - need advice please

Post by MF74 »

Hi, I have just fitted a pair of captains seats into my van.

I have a problem with the armrest on one of the seats. On one side the armrest wobbles side to side and has a lot of play in it, but still works ok (stops on the adjusting wheel in the desired position).

The armrest on the other side is broken internally and the adjusting wheel & rod just pull completely out, so it doesn't hold it's position, just flops down. I can hear something rattling around inside the armrest.

I have done a search but the links I found don't seem to work.

So I would like to know:

1) how to tighten the armrest so stop all the loose play

and

2) how to reattach the rod.

I have taken the black end cover off (2 screws) which reveals the stapled on cover and foam, which looks like its glued on round a black plastic box bit. I can't see any way into them apart from picking the stitching undone then cutting through the foam?

I'm off on a trip soon so any info would be really appreciated! Cheers.

On one side the armrest wobbles side to side and has a lot of play in it

The arm is held on to the seat by a roll pin that goes through a solid spindle attached to the side of the seat. If you pull the foam of the arm away from the seat at that end you should be able to see the pin & spindle. On my van the sleeve on the arm that fits over the spindle had started to split so could rock about on the spindle. I fixed it by knocking the pin out to remove the arm. Closed up the crack in the sleeve in a vice & tack welded it to stop it opening up again.

Ok thanks for that.

Just so I understand the only way of getting an armrest off is to unpick all the stitching, then push/cut away the foam to get to the fixings? (I can't see any other way into them!)

Cheers

Hi,

What type of captains seats did you fit? Were they original T25 ones? I want to put some in my van but they seem to be very rare, any advise on what's the easiest ones to fit (still finding my way around a tool bag)

Yes they are original T25 ones, and were so easy to fit, just slide the old seats off the runners and slide the new ones on, took less than a minute, job done!

Quick update, eventually found some captain seats and now have them installed. It was a 10 minute job, they just slid the old one straight off the runners and slide the new ones in.

A great upgrade and makes driving even more relaxing.

Old seats are now going on ebay.

Good idea, just not sure what they're worth. Will put them up for offers.
