2.0 CU solex carb dripping fuel

Post by mgbman »

Fitted facet electric pump recently and pleased with it. Have done over 200 miles since without problem. No carb leaks at all.

This week decided to back the van down my steep driveway so I could drive out forwards instead of reversing. Now petrol is dripping from one of the solex carbs with the engine and ignition switched off (pump off).

Started engine, drip stopped. Switched off, petrol drips.

Hard to see where the petrol is dripping from on the carb, could this be float or needle problem.

I am not driving the van until sorted.

I can only think that perhaps the fuel shut off solenoid on that carb (thats the big silver clylindrical thing sticking out the side with a 12v feed to it) isn't functioning, or the rubber seal that it pushes against inside the carb is worn/deteriorated. Also make sure that any fuel hoses are in very good condition and have good quality clamps rather than cheap jubilee clips on them.

The original Type 3 vw eg variant,1500 notchback etc. modified the fuel pumps to incorporate a valve to prevent fuel seeping through from the fuel tank to the engine sump via the pump, carb and inlet manifold when car parked pointing uphill I have vague recollections of a notchback coming in with a knackered engine cos it had been started with a sump full of fuel. I remember doing a beach buggy a few years ago with a fuel leak and a sump with petrol in. The customer had fitted an electric fuel pump and reversed it down his steep drive over the following week. I put it back to original pump, changed oil and he toured Spain with no probs. If fuel tank is higher than carb the fuel will try to gravity feed into sump. It seems to me if your elec pump has a check device in it's not working. Check your oil for overfull/ petrol smell and park pointing downhill until it's solved

Yes it is a needle valve leaking. The valve should hold the fuel back from the tank especially as there is less pressure than with the pump running.
