1st gear

Post by eoin95 »

Hey,

new to this forum but have received help from similar forums in the past so hoping to get some help here!! I picked up my t25 camper two days ago and I am delighted with it. 1987 reg, 330k miles on the clock and its still goin well!! I have a small problem when getting into first gear. The gear lever needs to be pushed down (as if going into reverse) and then sloted over towards reverse gear but up into first gear. This isn't a major problem but after driving it most of yesterday trying to get it home I found it a problem when having to stop and start again in a hurry, like at a stop sign or in traffic. I kept missing 1st gear and going into reverse. Nearly even revered into another car!!

After having a look online etc I am think it is one of 2 things....

1) the stop plate has been misaligned (if possible) or is worn or damaged....
2) The gear stick lever plate is not alligned properly onto the mounting plate - the 2 little holes don't line up 100%, the are off by about 2mm, would this be enough to cause my 1st gear problems....

Any help on this issue would be very much appreciated. I am not really great at mechanical stuff but will give basic jobs a go..

Thanks

adjustment is at the collar in the middle of the linkage, gearstick in neutral, loosen pinch bolt of collar, 2nd person in cab move gearstick side to side in neutral and then holds stick in neutral in rightmost position ie where 3rd and 4th would be and you lock off the pinch bolt then it should be right assuming there isn't gross wear in any of the linkage parts - often having to go under gate for 1st is due to wear to nylon tips on end of linkage under stick and adjustment won't fully sort that only a repair

Thanks for the info, I'll be trying a trip this weekend so next week I might roll under and have a look at the gear linkages. The spare wheel is in the way so couldnt get a quick look during the week!!

the joint you are looking to adjust is after the petrol tank about half way down your van , its a pain to get at , jack your van up on the drivers side and its normally two 13mm spanners to undo the clamp , the rods are keyed so mark it with some tipex on both parts before you start so you know which way you have turned it , hope this all makes sense , i have just done mine and its like driving a new van
