alternative roof / head linings for a tin top...

I have a panel van that I'm converting. There is no headlinging in it whatsoever, not even in the cab. The roof has had a load of thick insulating foam glued to it, deep enough that it drops a mill or two below the metal framework of the roof. On my old van I had a cheap option of fur lining straight onto the metal [don't laugh!], but I'd like a better solution in this van.

I just don't know where to begin with this one. It needs to be affordable, no, cheap, and I'm thinking along the lines of mdf or hardboard panel along the length, but no idea on how I'm going ot fit it. Anyone done a similar project, and has dimensions or other tips? I would probably like to line the panel with leatherette [I got some mean cobalt blue for lining the cab door panels, from Cheshire Motor Caravans at the CVWOC Jamboree this summer, figure I could get some more]

Note: there is a sunroof fitted over the cab, so any plan needs to take this into account.

just a stab but try somthing like an old fishing or golf umbrella for the bendy metal rods (fishing and golf brolies are big so might be long enough) then get down to your local material shop (up north we have "boys" for cheap material) the headlining doesnt have to be tough as it is not like the chairs etc.. then get stiching (can make a templet out of newspaper first. just a stab i havent tried this yet but will do in a few months when my roof is ready

I used to own a Bedford CF "passion wagon" ( with a 2.3 VX4/90 motor, nice paint job and alloys, but thats another tail )

On that, I lined the roof and side walls with 1/4" thick polystyrene sheets ( got from the likes of B&Q ) this was stuck on with some big tins of commercial grade epoxy glue ( the only thing I could find that stuck to the metal and didn't damage the styrene ) Then I got some rolls of Hessian sacking stuff with a backing on it ( from a wallpaper shop ) and glued that on with heavy duty wallpaper paste.

As both materials were cheap, and easy to cut with scissors, the job was not hard ( even for me !! ) and mistakes in cutting the shapes were just solved by chucking that bit away and doing it again !!

The end result was warm, quiet, looked good and lasted for the 9 years I owned that van.

Yeh - it wasn't "sacking" - it was a very heavy duty wallpaper like stuff - but with a dark brown hessian type finish - it did look good - honest it did.

Only have hard copy photos of that one, and no scanner, so can't prove it at this moment
