1.9 d 1y engine struggling to start
hi all ive just put a 1.9 in my van from a 1.6 jx and having problems starting it it runs fine from a jerry can but soon as you connect the pipes to the filter nothing connect to jerry can running again then it revs its self on full power and wouldnt shut down had to stall it to kill engine any ideas ?????
Re: 1.9 d 1y engine struggling to start
Might be relevant, my pump had no spring in the cut out valve as I think in an upright position as fitted in the donor car gravity drops it down, might be worth swapping with your old one?

Re: 1.9 d 1y engine struggling to start
Hi
I had both problems when I did a swop to 1.9 AEF engine from 1.6.
Here is how I resolved my issues
1 not starting when connected to filter - fit an in line bulb type pump between the filter and diesel pump. Bleed off at injectors and prime/pressurise the system with the hand bulb pump
2- Mine wouldnt switch off…. traced issue to a small amount or voltage finding its way to stop solenoid - so test that when ign is off so is the power supply to the stop solenoid that holds it open.. Unplugging the connector to alternator meant that the engine would shut down on the key but you dont get the red ignition light on start up.
Let us know how you get on and what the fix was
All the best

Does anyone know where to get a oil dipstick mine has brocken its the orange one going into the sump from the side through the no plate flap.
Re: 1.9 d 1y engine struggling to start
Is it the clip type return feed connector on the filter. If so.. have you got that T correctly/fully fitted into filter.
You need to make sure filter is full sometimez lift pump isn't quite up to it.
Suggestion to fit an inline bulb pump like Peugeots have is a good one esp. If u run out of fuel. A godsend then.
Try sucking fuel out of pump's return spigot with long clear tube (to avoid ingestion) .
