Bus (1980 T25 a/c 2lt) failed MOT this morning on only handbrake efficiency . Apparently only 15.8% on both rear wheels when minimum is 16%. This implies to me perhaps something between cable split and handbrake lever or it could be even amounts of rush on the handbrake cam levers on the rear wheels?
The hand brake on my van is fantastic, the best Ive ever had, same type as yours.
Assuming that your shoes and cables are in good nick, and he's talking about both sides failing. Here's how I adjust mine.
Jack up (use axle stands for safety) and take off the rear wheels/drums (look out for wear ridge on edge of drums and remove as necessary otherwise you wont get a true reading). Check that the shoes are dry and not covered in fluid. You could if you so wish deglaze the shoes surfaces.
Adjust the automatic adjusters by hand so the brake drums just clear and the brakes DO NOT drag. Re-fit the wheels, at this stage you should have no more than 2 clicks at the handbrake lever end. Operate the handbrake several times to make sure all is well, then let it off the jack. Don't forget to check your wheel nuts.
1 click on lever and the van will not roll, 2 clicks and I defy anyone to try and move it even with a full load.
Some may say that the brakes will be set too tight, but I'm speaking from experience and have never had the slightest trouble, and my van always flies through the MOT.
