Won't start after ht lead and dizzy cap change
Today I've changed the spark plugs, ht leads and cap.
After changing the plugs and leads I started the van and all was fine.
Once I changed the cap the van now won't start.
It's possible I left the ignition on whilst changing the cap. (OOPS)
Can anyone think of what to try to get the camper going again?
Many thanks

Check the carbon plunger inside the cap hasn't broken off or got stuck in.
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

Thanks boxy,
Checked and it's intact!
Anything else I can check?
I'm worried I've fried the ignition module

Unlikely you have done damage by leaving ignition on
have you tried putting the old parts back?

Yep,
I've tried putting the old cap back on, with no success.
It turns the starter motor over but it won't fire up and gave a loud backfire
The battery is now dead so been put on charge.
The leads are on correctly but should the cap be a certain way around?
I've tried it both ways but was just wondering.
The underneath of the cap has a number 3 printed on it. Should the 3rd HT lead sit on this number?
I've just checked the Haynes (should have done this prior, I know)
It says don't touch HT leads etc with ignition on.

Hello,
Firing order 1432..
rotor arm pointing to you as you crank the engine by hand.. notch on 0 degrees ..tdc..
If it backfires you may be 180 degrees out..
you won't be the first....
This might help

Cordialement,

I hadn't moved the rotor arm but could it have moved out of position as I took the cap off?
Thanks for all your help (yet again)

The cap has a keyway....a lug that protrudes. This lug goes into a cutout in the edge of the distributor body. It might not be obvious as it is partly covered by the plastic cover. You can normally feel when the cap drops into the locating slot, then clip down after it it in place.

And obviously those leads need to be in the right places on the cap....this is not a mix and match.....

Mine won't start AT ALL if I leave the ignition on for ten minutes. Manys a time I've had to sit there with ignition off and wait.....and wait.....until she finally starts no prob.

you may have burnt the coil out if you have left the coil switched on for any length of time

You are correct, electronic ignition systems won't burn out the coil. No current flows through it when there is no pulse from the hall sensor.

I've put all the original plugs, leads and cap back on but it still won't start.
Even changed the coil.
Any ideas?
Getting really disheartened

Re: Won't start after ht lead and dizzy cap change
Don't worry, it's going to be summat daft, just be methodical.
Have you tested for sparks at the plugs ?
If "yes" then double check the leads are on the right way on the cap.
If "no" report back and "we" will go a bit deeper.
By the way, there is fuel getting through isn't there ? (you would not be the first to have fallen into that trap, ie, out of petrol or blockage / pump issue). Coincidences do happen
