advice- should I rebuild my carbs

Post by biker1981 »

Just some advice really.

My van currently runs fairly well, although I think it runs rich and a bit resistent on power. its a 2.0 Aircooled. I have bought a new exhaust system that im waiting to put on. Last MOT i really struggled to get the emmissions down.

I have seen carb rebuild kits, and i have played with some SU carbs. I know it could do with being tuned and if anyone could recommend a garage in the northeast ?

Should I rebuild these carbs with fresh gaskets or am i just throughing money at for nothing and it could just do with a tune up ? is it difficult to do ??

if they have not been rebuilt I would fit new gaskets but the spindles n the carbs wear also what would need re bushing

If the spindle or the hole it fits through is worn or oval, re-bushing makes up the missing metal and stops any fuel / air leaks. I'd get the carbs set-up or learn to do it yourself before ripping them apart. There are a lot of adjustments needed to get a pair of Solex's running properly. The chances are a previous owner has got one wrong and then messed up all the others trying to fix the problem.

Make a cup of tea or get a beer and have a read through this lot.

A friend at work machined new bushes for me. Ours has previously been reworked with brass bushings, but they had worn out. He had to set the carb up on a mill to get it square and machine out the old bushings first!

The wear was causing a petrol leak... Not good!
