AAZ install. New turbo leaking out exhaust...

Post by sirivor70 »

Hi there. After much searching I am going to write my own post as I cannot seem to find the right answer.

I have just gotten my bus back after an engine transplant. Gone from a 2.1 to a 1.9 AAZ. Very good install by someone who knows his stuff and it looks factory.

The engine came out of crashed Vento which had 50k miles on the clock. Saw it running when I bought it 6 years back but has been sitting till this install. I pulled all the relevant JX pieces together to make it happen....new JX turbo, manifold, sump etc

All works well except that I have oil leaking out of the exhaust joint before the silencer. So I am taking it that its coming from the turbo and from what I am reading, it must be due to back pressure in the sump. Oil return line from Brickwerks seems fine as does the PCV on the rocker.

Consensus is to drive it for a while and it might just go away....engine needs to get used to being alive again. But my question is, will it destroy the brand new turbo in the process?

Any thoughts peeps?

Many thanks

My own experience of diesel turbos leaking oil is they can get worse and then consume the engine oil and run away until it's gone bang.

I'm no mechanic though but I'd be cautious.

If the oil flow and return are new, i would want the turbo looking at. But can't really see any harm in running it for a bit and seeing what happens. It must have a years warranty? Out of interest, where did you get the turbo?

Thanks folks. Really appreciate the input.

Turbo was sourced new from Bernd Jaeger in Germany about about three years back, so well out of warranty. Been collecting and saving for quite a while :-) Return line is new from Brickwerks, but you are correct, must check is it actually returning. Have fitted an oil cooler as well, so must make allowances on oil amount for that also.
