Alarm fitted - just need to get 2 wires past the B Pillar

Post by willpom »

Banging my head against a wall!!

Need to get 2 wires past the B pillar for 'boot zone' and to link sliding door courtesy light to cab circuit for 'door zone' of alarm. SPENT ALL DAY TRYING.

Is there something I'm missing here? I can get the wires as far as the B pillar from either the back or front from behind the fuse box but then I get stuck. Tried passing them through the wire tube the light wires run in but again stuck at same point, does it go through a grommet?

I thought I left the easy bits of fitting the alarm until last, how wrong I was!

Straightened out steel coat hanger and a LOT of patience. Try to get it through next to the VW wiring tube rather than in with it; easiest from the front IIRC and go carefully lest you damage other wiring. Once through attach wires (PVC tape is good) and drag steel back. The available gap is as wide as a frightened rabbit's sphincter so keep the steel to wire joint as small as possible without compromising the strength of the joint - you don't want the wires coming off. Stagger where the wires are attached if the joint is too large to pull back through the gap.
It is possible....

It's not easy there is like a half bulk head in the channel you have to get the cable to go towards the outside of the vehicle and if it has fresh air ventilation to the rear (four lever heater controls) expanded foam is squirted into the channel just forward of the B post to stop air flowing back down the A post.

How did I miss that? Had to cut a hole in headliner where the passenger courtesy light would have been now has the blank showing but all good. Fed the 'two' wires from fuse box area as one doubled over so loop at end up into the valley here then sent the coat hanger through from the sliding door courtesy light which I got second time. Had a hook on the coat hanger which eventually grabbed the wires and pulled them through. Now to get one of them through to the back which I think may have a similar problem, will try over the weekend.

Thanks 1664

Oh yes, I keep forgetting most vans don't have a courtesy light already there - I installed one years ago when I removed the headlining for other reasons. Since you now have a hole, you could always fill it with another courtesy light (if you want to of course)

I have some but struggled so much with them in places, hence the coat hanger
