Probs with me blowin exhaust.......

Post by macthejaffa »

Ive known me exhaust was blowing but under closer inspection the offside pipe has been rotted along the inside of it and apparently its been caused by a stud missing where it meets the cylinder....Ive got a 1983 1.9 watercooled and am not sure what this stud is...looked in the JK catalogue but confused as to whats what.....is it easy to replace the pipe and fit this stud? Any help greatly appreciated!

My van's a similar age as yours, the good news is you have the cheaper exhaust system of the two. This consists of four 'pipes' and the silencer, of which you can buy them all individually but to be honest you can never get them apart so it's best to buy the lot. As for the missing stud, if your lucky it may have been replaced by a bolt which has fell out (but i doubt it) so you may find it has snapped off in which case you need to drill and tap the old one out and replace with either a new stud or bolt, usually 8mm.
Depending on which one it is you may be able to get at it with the engine in place, if not then you will need to drop it out.
