Curtains / Thermo covers for front cab only

Post by ghost123uk »

Hi all,

OK, the Tin-Top is now pretty much "de-bugged" after it's restoration and time has come to sort curtains.

No problem at the back, the 4 side windows and rear window will have some nice, dusty blue, very "VW" style curtains, made up (from some home curtains I found in a charity shop :))

In the past we had another curtain that pulled across behind the front seats, but this time we want curtains or mats that go up against the front screen and door windows (for more space). Fitting curtain wire (or rails) seems a bit tricky, so I was thinking along the lines of those sucker equipped "Thermo Mats" like JK sell. They only come in full van sets though and aren't cheap enough to warrant not using more than half of the kit. There were some on ebay for just the front, (here) but for used ones, at over £60, they seemed expensive :?

I am sure I read on here (years ago) about someone making their own suck on Thermo Mats = anyone ? (p.s. - Not too bothered about the "Thermo" aspect, mine will mostly just be for privacy).

Ideas welcomed :)

A bit of research later I found this thread = https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=92849" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Might look at the home made option, but I wonder if the ones mentioned here

are still available?

Hi Ghost

Three thoughts:

1) JK sell a kit for making your own.
2) You could consider an exterior screen of some kind. I have JK's one and it seems to do the job reasonably well - certainly stops condensation in the cab area.
3) Because I've got that front screen I might be interested in splitting a full set of JK's interior thermo screens - you take the front 3 and I'll take the rear 5.

As mine is an unconverted tin top, I didn't want curtain wires or similar around the front either. So I went the home made route, using neodymium magnets instead of curtain hooks. Just soldered a small washer to a safety pin, then araldited that to the magnet. It works fine in battle, putting up and taking down only taking a few seconds.

By using the safety pins, it means that the magnets are easily removable for curtain washing as well. If the magnets are left in when washing the curtains end up attached to the washer drum!

Hey Chris, that sounds like an ideal solution :ok

If you wish to go ahead with this, let me know, I can buy them and send you the rear 5 and you can pay me via PayPal :)
