horn upgrade

Post by domiles1 »

It seems to me that the T25 horn runs directly from a 12V source without using a relay (am I right?) and therefore an upgrade will involve installing a relay. My question is what do I use for the relay switching and what for the horn power? If I use the existing wires for the relay activation, where do I take power from for the horn? Would it be from a point in the fuse box or direct from the battery?
Thanks.

From a suitable fuse in the fusebox, or use an inline fuse and take the feed from the big +ve power star connector behind the fuse box.

Not a bad idea to relay this, should think 10-15 A would be quite sufficient, but check your new horn !

I have a set of Dukes Of Hazzard type air horns. I got them in the mid eighties when it was all the rage. They should hopefully still be in a cupboard at my mums. I've been waiting a long time for a suitable vehicle to put them on and I think I've found it, but I won't be jumping any bridges in a hurry! :D

Those musical air horns are illegal on any vehicle built from 1971 onwards. I found that out back in the 70s when I wanted to fit some to my 1974 Beetle 1303S.

ive just bought an ooogar horn, and yeah they aint legal but you get a wiring diagram on the box showing you how to hook it up with a relay and a switch, so you can swop between your standard and 'fancy' horn, getting you round the legality (mot).

of course you'll only switch to and use your musical horn at shows etc :D

as for dixie horns they seem to go for about £40ish unless you go to ebay

when used as the main horn, it is not illegal to have them for novelty use as long as there is a fully functioning single tone unit activated by pushing the correct button!

The horn for road use can be single or twin tone. If a second multi tone/musical horn is fitted it must only be used off road.
