My van failed its MOT today. But only on 4 small items-one of the windscreen washer squirters is a bit clogged up and weak, a cracked drivers side mirror, a torn steering gaitor, and the LHD headlights that are on it need changing to RHD ones. Not too bad for a van I got off German Ebay, unseen, other than a few photo's. Anyway, the question is this- when I start ringing the local scrapyards up for a pair of headlights, what other vehicles are they fitted to? ie Golf, Beetle etc. It might help when I ring round incase they all go "VW Transporter? No chance mate"etc.
Nearly forgot, they are the round ones, H4 I think.
Thanks
Shane
Dont worry about the headlamps if you have masked the dip beam correctley it should pass the mot. I have had one lhd lamp and one rhd lamp for the past 3 years with no problem.
Why not just buy some new ones, ( take it they are round?) they are only around £30 each.
They ain't fitted to anything else, well, you can f**k about with the brackets, chopping this, breaking that, but the new ones aren't exactly dear, and with them being new they will be really efficient.
The MOT guy said he wouldn't like to do the tape thing. Apparently the police don't like it. It's ok for a temporary measure, like if you're going touring in Europe for a couple of weeks, but not for permanent use.
And as for £30 each! Not a bad price, and sort of what I thought they might be new, but I got made redundant last month, so money is a bit tight at the moment and I was just looking to get it through the MOT really. At a later date though, I would like to wire them to a relay so they shine a bit brighter. Might have to stump up the money if none of the local scrappers has them though
It dont matter what the police "think". If your lights are pointing in the right place and they dont dazzel on dip the mot guy has to pass it and then it is road legal. Getting you on the road till you find some lamps at the right price. Try ebay i have seen the round ones on there.
I have a pair that I took off my van (round) and I also have a mirror. Call it a redundacy present just pay the postage and I'll gladly send them to you, that's what this club is all about helping each other.
PS I'm away for the week starting Saturday
& where abouts are you if its on the way I'll drop them off for you
Always remember one thing my friend, this is the real thing. Life is not a dress rehearsal. So live life to the full with your BUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone know if it's possible to adjust LHD spec headlights [the square type.] enough using the screws, to get the correct beam pattern for RHD use without having to use the stick-on deflectors? seems to me that the stick-on triangle covers up the most useful part of the beam. I know you can get new RHD ones, but only seen them for about 100 quid each. not sure if the adjustment would let the light turn enough to bring the beam to the right place, or is the spread of light totally different , and i'm just being thick! [not the 1st time]
not having a go but sounds like your mot guy is a bit to picky (although a appreciate they have to do their job)you can get sticky back mirrors that can be placed over the cracked mirror (my mot guy did this to an old car of mine to get it through) and sticky beam adjusters for the lights
--you cant make a lhd headlight into an rhd one as the prismatics are the oposite way round--however instead of using tape you can buy the stickon clear beam benders--now most of these are for changing rhd to lhd but if you look round the auto shops you can find dual purpose ones that can be used to change either l or r headlamps depending on what way they are stuck on-
