Loss of power and heavy on fuel

Hi, we have a 1.9 petrol 87 panelvan. The engine is a new vega engine although the carb is original. It uses about £10 fuel per 20 miles and is very underpowered with flat spots. When we reach 50mph it seems to perk up and power returns. Any suggestions? I have changed all ht leads, plugs and coil.

Take it somewhere to get the timing checked and the carb set up. Your symptoms could be cause by numerous issues. The high fuel consumption could be a choke problem but if you don't know what you're doing, fiddling with the carb could make things worse.
