T3 reluctant to start if not used daily.

Post by yellowback »

My 1989 petrol T3 starts on the button and runs perfectly when used daily. But left more than a day its reluctant. A new fuel pump didn't help.Any ideas gratefully received. yellowback.

Depress the accelerator fully twice.
release the acc.
turn the key and crank.
once started blip the acc. to reduce idle speed.

if this fails, then there is an issue with ...
choke setting (3mm gap fully cosed..see haynes)
choke mechanism seized
fuel delivery to carb
fuel pulling back from carb due to airleak in pump
Air leak in pulldown unit.
plugs
leads

Tks Kev, I'm no mechanic so I'll pass your thoughts on to my garage for them to try. It's just so odd, the longer it's left the more reluctant it is to start- start it daily - no problem. Surely it must be a fuel supply issue? yellowback.

It,s quite a distance from the tank to the carb. I have to charge the fuel line by turning the engine over, then waiting a few minutes. The engine fires then. My van is left longer than yours however

Have "we" considered lazy starting due to the common "something" draining the battery when left unused?
Or a failing battery flattening itself somewhat?

Does it spin over as fast after being left for a few days ?

Tks Guys, I don't think its a battery problem coz its still reluctant when fully charged, but I'll check anyway. I'll try waiting a few minuets during cranking to see if that helps - if so , it looks like a fuel supply issue? Regards Yellowback.

You should have a float chamber full of fuel, even if the pipes were empty it should start

So I wonder if the float chamber could drain away somehow?

O K , lets put this one to bed!
I think the problem is a combination of a failing battery and ageing carb. Keeping the battery fully charged helps but is not the complete answer (may be a new one is)? The choke probably isn't quite 100% - needing the odd 'blip' - to move it along, but it's not serious. At the end of the day once up to temp it runs fine for an' old un '
Tks again for your help, - especially Ghost - who goes top of the class!

Regards, Yellowback.
