mpg........
hi know its probably been covered a thousand times but I have a 1.9 petrol engine which is running quite well , just been into garage and had loads of money spent on it.
went out at the weekend & worked out its probably doing 20 mpg, is that about right? this was on an 80 mile run to whitby , so mainly A roads & a bit of the A1 .

Re: mpg........
I did 500 miles in mine last week on the A1/M1 and A roads and averaged 28mpg

Re: mpg........
i think you need to measure your mpg over a lot longer time and mileage period, little snap shots like a 80 mile journey will not give you a true picture. Even on full tanks you can get big differences.
here's a chart you can use to record it all
http://www.club80-90.co.uk/Downloads/MP ... _Miles.xls" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
looks like this, as you can see it varies a fair bit. but it does average it out for you

Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you

Gear 4 on a four speed is about the same ratio as gear 5 on a standard five speed. So it depends how heavy/gentle you are on the throttle and brakes and how often you stop/start as well as whether it is hilly or not. I get between 20 and 28 on a long run depending on driving conditions and speed. I once got 30 mpg on a return journey on a steady run on flat roads at a constant 50mph, but that was unusual. Your engine is pulling a heavy vehicle so you won't get modern car mpg.

Re: mpg........
My petrol 1.9DG (4 gears) does about 26mpg on long motorway trips at steady 55 - 60mph.

Re: mpg........
My DG never got above 20mpg.
Always loaded in full camping order.

Quit ad modum panis tosti
Re: mpg........
my old DG high top camper 4 speed = 27mpg averaged over 12 months 60mph max mostly although 65 occasionally . did get 80mph once just to see
check the obvious , gearbox codes(only way to 99% sure on your ratios) , tyre pressures and sizes( i put 195 80 14 on the rear) ,throttle is open full( can have the opposite effect tho)
driving habbit's- perhaps your staying in each gear for too long ? you should never be above 3/4 throttle even pulling off from lights , don't try and keep up with everything else as it pulls away , drive in a relaxed way - these 2 can be a major cause of mpg reduction! only minor changes can effect mpg!
i have adjusted my throttle on my camper so it does not open fully at foot to the floor, this seems to increase my mpg by a few miles and yet i tried driving with the same style when i could get full throttle
people will always give if's and maybee's about mpg so i just figure it with how many miles i can get from a tank ,and usually i have to fill up between 400-450 miles although i may have managed a bit more with the 1.9td this time( its still showing 1/4 tank at 385 miles)!
check some obvious stuff yourself on your engine - vacum advance is not leaking , air leaks , ask the garage what the timing and co% settings / readings are and see if they are factory correct ect.
driving cold with the choke on will reduce your mpg considerably so let the engine warm a little first!

No it aint there is a 5% difference which in gear terms is a fair bit! I know as I have a 4 speed box with 4th swapped out for a 5th gear cog! Oh and my van gets 32 mpg sat at 70 to 75 all day, oh it is a scooby lump!

Re: mpg........
there is a 5% difference
its all down to box internals
if you dont know the codes its a lottery!
