Dead in the water

Post by scarysteve »

Merry Xmas - bored yet? Well here is a teaser for you.
Just got the van (1983vw t25 ct 1.6 Aircooled petrol) towed back from the garage.
It wouldn't start. Tried to turn but not firing.
All the usual suspects have been checked.
Fuel good
Spark good
Compression good
Battery, alternator and starter motor checked ok.
All cables pipes earths plugs etc check
Dizzy and timer checked ok
Took dizzy out to check if worn it was fine
But... When they put it back in she did fire up for about two minutes then died again
Clue here maybe
Any advice or help welcome because she is no use to me in present state
Cheers

Wait for a petrol afficianado but it sounds purely fuel delivery problem to me. Fuel good to where?

Mechanical fuel pump? suspect....filter in carb blocked....

Look down the carb....manually pump the throttle lever, can you see petrol squirting? if not the carb 'float chamber' is empty (suspect the above)

Hello,

I thought I had all your carbs.... :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

You HAVE, of course got the 'to and from' the pump pipes round the right way..

Try connecting a small petrol container to the inlet side of the pump and see if it runs.. remember the return to the tank will use up the fuel in a short time.. as it goes back to the tank..

If that does work then you have a problem with the 'wonderfully' designed and placed fuel filter..

If not then gravity feed direct to the carb..

If that works then it is the pump.. (normally lasts forever)..

If not then its definitely the flux converter.. needs new Di lithium crystals..

PM you soon..

Cordialement,

:ok

Hey Sarran. Did you get all my bits aka the two parcels?
Anyways..update on the van.
Opened up the carb to check for fuel. Jet is pumping fuel into front chamber. Fuel is going into float chamber at back and everything seems to be flowing as it should.
So pump good carb good me thinks.
Back to the distributor and timing etc. Surely this is where the issue lies???

Yes thanks....

But £27.50 postage...

Usually is..

Remember..setting up an engine... valve timing..then ignition timing.. then carburation..

I'm (hopefully) tuning the 'Ooops' carbs this weekend.. then final fitting..

Then I'll get on with yours..
