CS service intervals and dipstick length

Post by Bendyknees »

Just wondering if the autodata cd is correct in saying its 5000 miles between oil and filter changes? Who uses what oil? Also it says that it should take between 4-4.5 litres. last time i did it it took nearly 6 litres to the max mark on the dipstick and has stayed there for a while with no excess smoke out the rear. How long should the dipstick be from end to marks?

I'm in a similar predicament (i.e. same engine...)

The VW owners manual in the glove compartment says 4 litres without filter change, 4.5 litres with: this has been confirmed by others. I've heard it said that it's worth changing the oil every 3000 miles, Simon Baxter says that should include filter change each time.

Dipstick? Is yours an original engine or a conversion? If a conversion, I'd assume that the process of tilting the engine 30 degrees would render the original dipstick useless.

Im not sure if its a conversion or not, if it is they have done a pukka job of swappin it. the dipstick tube still comes out the rear flap so id guess its the right 1. As for 3000 mile intervals ouch! im well past that id best toddle off an get some valvoline or summit. Has any1 tried that lucas long life oil which is supposed to be good for any engine for like 50 000 miles? Im sceptical but just wondered.

dont waste your money!
Good old mineral oil, and change it regular, oil is cheap!
If your dipstick tube is correct, in the correct place, and it isnt a turbo ( which you said it aint) go with the book.

have you looked at the WiKi on this subject?

I always change WBX oil at 2000 and the filter every other change (4000) but dont think the dervs are that fussy

Right ive changed the oil an filter. put in 4 litres and the dipstick wasnt even wet. stuck in a litre and its a couple of cm's up the base, so at least i can top up now to the bottom of the dipstick.

correct oil

Post by blue »

mine's a 1.6 D too...but my mechanic said to use 10, not 15-40 oil. I use Castrol GTD plus, as with my 1.7D. Am I better off with 10 or 15 in mine? always changed my oil and filter at 5000 miles, but now, maybe more often is a good idea...
