Water in Diesel engine

Post by Al Housman »

Not a T25 but VW all the same!!

My son has a T3 2.5 tdi and drove it through a ford a few days ago. After about a mile it spluttered a bit. He drove on and then left it for a couple of hours. It wouldn't start so when he came to leave I pulled him with my syncro and we got it going only for it to stop at a junction (it seemed happy revving but died when he let the revs drop) and despite me towing him for about 4 miles it wouldn't start.

We've dried it out, replaced glow plugs etc but still no joy. It turns over ok and sounds like it wants to start but can't quite make it. Clouds of white smoke so I guess the stop solenoid is working.

I'm trying to find reasons not to think he may have bent a conrod or more through water causing too much pressure in the cylinders but I can't rule this out. It almost feels like the timing has slipped and a mechanic friend did tell me that that happened to one of his citroen diesels when it went in water.

I can't think of an electrical reason for this problem other than glow plugs but is it possible for the diesel pump to misfunction if something in the ecu circuitry gets wet?

Any good news stories would be gratefully received. Or (gloom) any test to confirm a bent conrod.....

I wonder why this post was moved into T25 Alternative Engine Forum? Makes more sense to be in mechanical! :)

Compression test will confirm the engine has at least one bent rod....sorry.
