running on two cylinders

Post by bananavan »

I an travelling in Spain and have an 85 t25 running on two cylinders I think . I had a garage diagnose the problem, although I am having language problems. I need some advise please.

When removing the spark plugs from the two cylinders on the left hand side one at a tim with a pair of pliers and holding them above the block there was little or no difference in the running of the engine. When the mechanic did the same with the right hand side there was a remarkable difference the engine quickend and rocked much more back and forth when placing the right hand side plugs back in their places one at a time.

I speak only a little spanish but got the gist of it that the two cylinders on the left hand side have much less compression especially when the engine is hot. The problem is less pronounced when the engine is cold.

I am able to drive the van, just with less power, especially when hot.

The questions are: What is/are the problems? How much would it cost to be fixed?

Please bear with me, I am assuming the head would have to be removed and the pistons examined.

The mechanic said it would be ok to drive but it is only a matter of time before the engine seizes of blows entirely.

I know this is all conjecture and my understanding of the problem is from limited spanish, please help with some advice. I would like to continue traveling and sell the van before I return home to Canada. Is this a near total engine loss, should I fix it, or sell it.

I suspect the braided hose from the inlet manifold to the brake servo, is leaking air into the manifold on the left hand side, weakening the mixture so much it fails to detonate, or so weakly it makes little difference.

Thanks Kev. Feeling a little better now. The mechanics kept muttering about carb problems. I suspect it is a left side thing. The van passed MOT in June. I hope it is a minor problem that just needs a tweak. Now if I could only find a guy that knows t25's down here.
