1z engine gearbox?

Post by mollucy »

Hello,
Would a 1z engine out of a 95 Golf require a different gearbox ? I have a JX in at moment. Dont know code(yes i have looked, cant find one). Also is there much work involved? Its on Ebay, Comes with plug and play ecu. and manifold.

ideally a TDi engine needs a bespoke gearbox as they pull less revs than the original engines
depends a bit on what code box you have and what size tyres you run and how heavy and how slow you drive but if you fit a TDi engine to a 1.6n/a diesel gearbox on standard tyres you end up with a 55mph van
you could also go flipped passat box or UN1 box

(Ha - Aidan has replied since I started writing my reply!)

It will work with your gearbox, but you will be revving the hell out of the engine if you plan on going over 60mph. Solutions would be to consider getting the gearbox rebuilt with higher gearing (speak to http://www.aidantalbot.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, but you will need to know the gearbox code for him to advise you), or the "flipped passat/audi A4" gearbox solution, which would make the install a more complex job.

As for the install, tdi's are more complicated than d/ td, because there is more wiring and the intercooler to deal with.

For what it's worth, i'm planning a 1Z conversion and have sourced a petrol 4-speed box, which has slightly higher gearing than my diesel 4 speed. Hopefully I can live with that while I save up for a gearbox rebuild to give me better cruising speed/ economy.

Exactly what the Oracle said!

My 1z did 55 on a standard box. Anything above that was painful to the ears ( and revs and mpg)

To me it was not just about mpg and engine speed though. It made the van so much more driveable as made better use of the torque.

Had a box with a 4.17 diff and better fourth and fifth in the end. Was an absolute joy to drive after that. Was hitting peak torque in all the gears just where I wanted it. Mpg improved no end and would happily fly up telegraph hill after that.

Yes...despite what some might say a tdi needs a longer gearbox...the 1z pulls so well from 1800 rpm onwards it can handle being over geared but after 3500 it's just wasting fuel..massive wheels are a solution in the meantime...225 75 16s can be squeezed on and will help matters but a proper longer box is better.
