My task for the winter period is to re-design our interior, so we have a bit more room for when summer is toddling around next year. What i want to know is, those of you who have built their own, what wood have you used and why?
We built our current interior around 2 1/2 years ago and used chipboard:-

This actually hasn't been to bad, but it does have a few chips in it now.
I am thinking of using plywood this time round. what do you think?

If any of you out there have done your own diy interiors, can we please see some pics and details of what you used and why, and if there is anything you would do differently next time?

Hi Kathyshack

I too am looking to upgrade my old Leisuredrive interior. I have looked at Calypso and others but they want around £1500 !!! Too rich for me.

I like your cooker/sink combo unit. Where did you get it?

If I come across any ideas I will pass them on.

Ikea do some nice compact furniture...was looking the other day and their little kitchens are cute

That's why it's called chipboard! :lol: :lol:

I think you will be far better off using plywood, it's stronger & should there ever be a water leak in your van your cupboards won't dissolve before your eyes. Chipboard cupboards aren't known as 'Weetabix cupboards' for nothing.

You mentioned storage, one of the most important considerations I think.
Can't have too much. Hope everything goes smoothly with the refit.

Ply is lighter , size for size than chipboard. It also lasts longer. And you can get it with a finish veneer in almost any wood. A slightly cheaper option is block board. This comes in same size sheets as ply, and same kinds of finish. Or you can go for a Formica finish. It is also better and safer to work with, gives better screw retention and if you are really into woodworking much better biscuit jointing.

i am going to be putting this interior in mine soon.its made from vollinger board.(ive never heard of it either.i was told thats what its called)..if you like the layout and need any measurements let me know.

The ply is called vohringer board. I am trying to find a supplier. So far I have been quoted from £80 to £120 per sheet. Definite case of measure 1000 times cut once I think :D

If I find a supplier I will post on here, if any of you lot know of an affordable supplier I would be grateful for the information.

that does look good, but i agree, a tad expensive. Esp with me having limited wood work skills! I'd be well miffed if i made a mistake! I was hoping to go down to my local wood merchant with sizes of pieces i needed. Thats what i did last time and they cut the big sheets up on the band saw for me. I don't mind cutting bits with a jigsaw, but thats about my limit really. How readily available is the veneered plywood mentioned above? I don't really remember seeing it at Clays. mm, wonder what plywood would look like stained then varnished? should be pretty waterproof then you would think hey?

Thanks for the offer of measurements rob. I'm going to try and keep the twin sliders though, so my interior will no doubt follow the bay deon interior type thing. Just won a popup cooker and sink unit out of a devon bay on ebay.... Would like to know how deep the cupbaords are though?

i put interiors in two t2's i owned a long time ago went to my local kitchen fitter place told them what i wanted and where they used ready made kitchen units cut down to size and a kitchen top that used a for purpose cooer and sink unit

quite a good fit and finish

suppose you cold have the same kicten units you have at home in your van as well

home away from home effect :)

kathy.when you say deep do you mean from cupboard door to side of van..or from cupboard door to bottom of van


Would like to know how deep the cupbaords are though

the only problem with that is the weight of home kitchen units.
