Only one bolt on starter ???
[img][/img]
Hi, trying to replace my starter motor today which I thought would be fairly straight forward, apart from trying to squeeze under bloody bus and seem to have found only one bolt holding it on. One side seems normal but the back side which is hard to see so I took a picture on my phone, there seems to be no bolt. Can't tell if it's a cap or not, anyone else had this or know what's wrong ? Sorry if I'm being thick, hopefully I can attach a pic to show the issue.
Cheers
Pete.
Ps
Van is a T25 2L Air cooled

Edited pic link for you

One of the bolts has a cap on it with a "flat" on one side. You undo a nut on the other end and then withdraw that special bolt.

Oh, and whilst you are there it is normally considered a "must" to replace the starter bush in the bellhousing as they often wear causing lazy starter syndrome. Cheap, but can be fiddly to do. Details on "how to" in the wiki

Re: Only one bolt on starter ???
Additionally, don't "test" any starter motor off the van as it has only got 1 bearing at one end, the other being the above mentioned one. Off van testing can wreck it in 3 seconds

Also when you buy the starter motor don't be pleb and drop it on to a hard concrete floor.

Re: Only one bolt on starter ???
Just checked out wiki, could find yesterday that's why I posted, however in have found it know and explains that it is a strange cheesehead bolt type on the air cooled vans. (We're they pissed when designing that) still not sure what tool to use to remove the bolt though. Does a normal socket work ?

It's quite easy to get to, no need to remove any tin ware from memory.

Re: Only one bolt on starter ???
It's ok. Realise what a tit I've been. I've already removed it once before when I changed my gearbox. It's the same bolt. Because I am removing starter I just presumed I had to take it off from the starter side. Doh !!! Thanks for your help.
