Glow Plug relay, wiring and box.

Post by Richardwhite »

Hi there folks,

Well, i've been a T25 owner for all of 48 hours and already I've run into issues! I've scoured the wiki and forums but can't see anything relating to this particular problem.

Apologies if this is retreading old ground but I'm having some issues with the glow plug system which I think will require some replacement parts which for the life of me I can't seem to find anywhere! I wondered if anyone might be able to steer me straight either with stockists or the correct names for things.

Basically due to some dodgy wiring in the relay box in the engine bay, and a frayed wire further down the circuit the right hand terminal on the glow plug fuse has melted - not completely through but still very loose and the screw won't stay tight. I've searched around but the only fuse box I can find really doesn't look like the right thing at all (one listed on VW Heriatge http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Fus ... try_US.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ). I also need to replace the relay as it seems to be sticking on and running a constant charge through the fuse which I think has caused a battery drain issue and overheating. I wondered if anyone knew whee I might be able to track down a replacement relay box (the whole plastic box that screws onto the back of the engine bay), and if it's not a one piece thing the socket that the relay plugs into, and fuse screws onto.

As a connected issue, the overheating fuse has melted through some of the wires from the relay which I think is causing an intermitent fault with the glow plug LED on the dash but with a bit of tinkering I might be able to solve that one a bit easier!

At the moment I'm having to unplug the relay and battery overnight to avoid draining it which isn't ideal...

Failing all of that, does anyone know of a good VW person in the West Mids area who might be able to take a look at it for me? I'm new to VW ownership and am feeling a little out of my depth!

Thanks in advance folks, let me know if you want me to post any more info/pictures.

Thanks!

Sorry, would also be useful to give the engine details...

It's a 1.6 turbo diesel in a 1989 Westfalia California. Standard engine as fitted (as far as I know...)

Thanks again for any advice :)
