Coolant pump - replaced

Had a new noise coming from the engine compartment for weeks now, when increasing revs. Took the fan belt off and noised stopped. Checked the generator bearings - fine. Checked the coolant pump and lots of movement. Bearings knackered, but at least it's not leaking yet. I have a new one from Brickwerks in the van as a spare. A fiddly job this, so it's going back into the garage to have the new one fitted next week.

That's a few I've seen or heard of where the bearings have failed before the gland itself, usually you can feel them with a screwdriver on the centere of the pump with the belt on and the engine running.

When ours failed, it was totally dry, no leaks at all. The bearings failed so badly that you could see the wonk in the pulley - the inner edge was almost touching the block. There was no squeeking before that point, and surprisingly little after. We only heard it because we happened to pull past a large wall with the window open entering a car park. It's not a huge job, but - yep - a little bit fiddly.

Yes mate. However, the pump is probably the original one or at least old and they wear out eventually. Wouldn't want it to fail on a long journey. My philosophy is keep your ears open, if you hear something that wasn't there before, check it out and replace it (pump £42 from Brickwerks). Don't wait till it fails.

I took it down to mike's garage and he produced his stethoscope first with a thin rod of metal at the end (clever bit of kit) with the fanbelt connected up. He heard something. Took fan belt off and that bearing was seriously wobbly. Thank you again Dr Mike.

New pump on. Only one broken bolt taking the old one off (gentle bollocking from Mike to one of his mechanics). I took the van out for a run today. No more knackered bearing noise interfering with that sweet regular engine sound! I'm so glad I got it fixed before the old pump packed up. I need to go on a trip now!
