Leisure batteries

Just read an article in the caravan club mag - yes I am a convert to vw campervans they tested and cut open 9 so called leisure batteries only 2 were true leisure with the right plate construction the others were rebadged starter batteries it seemed hmmmmmm........

Yes, that is true if a lot of batteries. Most people just use lead acid starter batteries. Do a search on here there is loads of info.

I've only ever used starter batteries as leisure batteries - they are fine as long as do not drain them flat.
I've used 2 over 10 years.

Same here. No problem with starter batteries for leisure. I could never find a leisure battery small enough to fit under the seat. I replaced my previous one after 5 years.

It seems to be one of those 'abused' areas in the trade.
The fact is you could be sold any old battery masquerading as a 'high amp' leisure and all for the cost of a 30 pence sticker.
The thread that instantly springs to mind is the so called 100ah 'low profile' leisure battery sold by Alpha which apparently is no bigger than other 'MAIN BRANDED' 70ah batteries..

Begs a question...how a non descript brand can produce a leisure battery with such diminutive dimensions that packs a 100ah punch but the likes of Bosch/Varta and Lucas cannot match their achievement.... ...like I say, 30p labels and who's going to argue the toss.

I had two if those batteries and they were rubbish. I used them for 6 months and they went flat very quickly. I did a Homebrew load test and I would say they were performing at less than 25%.

I returned them to Tayna and they gave me a full refund.
