Rear Air Scoops/vents

During the recent down pours I noticed a pool of water on the rear bed deck.
Removed the rear NS card liner and found a rather large hole on inner panel.

This has obviously cut in for a rear panel repair.
So what has been happening is, water has been running down the air vent, onto the hardboard liner and onto the bed deck.
Is there normally anything in this section to capture/channel the water .
Going to fill the hole but is it normal for the water to run all the way down to engine bay?

You could try shining a light on a mirror in the hole to see what is above. If I'm right, then you will likely see daylight via the vent holes, meaning its supposed to be like that. These vans were well sealed and cavity waxed from the factory so a bit of water wont do any harm.

If this is correct, then I'd put some rust proofing wax or similar on those burn marks [ caused by a spot-nail gun when those repairs were done ] so as to protect it, fix a cover plate over the hole & seal it up nicely and leave as-is.

To the right - if you zoom in they appear to be welded holes, not nail gun.

Funny that both panels are different colours though? E D I T: Doh, of course they are, because that panel was enclosed!

Deffo spot welds but done from the outside, so quite why they needed to cut the inner panel I've no idea. Spot welds run along the top of one of the seams to guess it has had a wheel arch?

Lots of luverly daylight but nothing to stop the water dripping all the way down to the engine bay.
Want to have a look to see how the water is drained on the drivers side, the plastic box that houses all the intake pipes must drain the water somehow?

Any advice as to rust proofing the bare metal, also the seams are a little damp further forward up the panel, need to be dried and proofed with something.

If you mean the box on the offside. thats the box of tricks that connects to the induction up to the carb, so doesn't have anything to do with drainage.

As for rustproofing, you could buy some waxoil and cover everything with that, that will do the trick

We had a similar leak with our van; the main hook up lead ran through the inner 'wall' of the fresh air cooling intake. Only when the van was a slight angle to the left did the water run down the intake, hit the cable and track through into the van near the water tank (Devon)
Sealed the cable up and gave the inside of the intake a coat of Dinitrol along all the seams.
