Water questions - newbie

Hi everyone,

Just bought a t25 a few weeks ago and getting my head around it all.
Just figuring out what needs topping up and what you top it up with.

What does the water tank behind the reg plate need filling up with, is it just water?

I've read a lot about coolant, is this something I need to refill or is this done during a service, if I need to refill it where do I do this ?

Sorry if these are obvious questions

It should be filled with a 50/50 mix of water and coolant up to the max mark.

Check the tank under the engine lid.it should be full to the brim when cold.

petrol engines need G12+ or equivilant
coolant should be changed after 2 years.

It's a 1.6 litre diesel, that's as much as I know

Do I do the coolant change or is that done at a service?

So basically I need to top up the tank behind the reg late with 50/50 and if the one in the engine bay isn't full to the brim I top up that with 50/50 too?

Also, do garages with vw mechanics tend to know the right coolant etc for services or do I need to tell them ?

as well as water / coolant checks it would be good to check the oil level ....and if you can get it booked in for an oil / filter change.

turbo diesels (assuming yours has a turbo) need good fresh oil.

it would be worth taking a photo of your engine bay....then people can point out the key bits to check....acts as a good reference for future stuff.

if looked after they are super reliable engines

Start getting your own service items, as keith says they need quality

When you get your own start to learn how to do it your self.
