Repairing and fitting oil filler pipe (diesel)

Post by MacAoidh »

I've had bother with leaky gaskets, wondering whether I'm doing the bolts up too tight or not tight enough. Does anyone have a scientific answer?

Thanks as always...

ever heard of Omni fit Liquid gasket? Etc?

If your using paper gaskets, old timers would say to clean the mating surfaces, not just a wipe use dab of thinners or meths and then rub off clean, and use a smear of grease (don't go mad) on the surfaces also.

Cork gaskets clean a dry surfaces again nothing wrong with using liquid gasket here. Wouldn't advise it on a head gasket, never. Best left to the pro's.

It your still havin leaks could be bolts too tight or surfaces are warped.

i use the Merc stuff omni fit from work.

Yes, the most recent attempt was a liquid gasket, really hopeless. Maybe I was still learning how to apply it? But I've got a paper gasket again for this attempt. Surfaces have been emery-papered very smooth, I'll try a trace of grease.

I think the problem is probably down to the fact that it's difficult to get the oil filler pipe to extend out of the access hatch without a bit of wiggling.

DH has advised 20lb torque, I'll give that a go.
