I have a 1990 1.9 petrol t25 high top. Has been in garage with oil leak, crank shaft seal replaced today but when taken out for test drive it started to leak again. Mechanic not too sure why, any suggestions?
Thanks for reading.

Re: Crank Shaft Seal
Hi,
Two possible causes:
1) Your end float is excessive.
Behind the flywheel are a series of shims that adjust how much the crank shaft can move front to back in the engine. If this is excessive then it will eat your new seal very quickly. Testing is easiest with a dial gauge, new shim are avialabale to adjust to the correct end float.
2) Rough / ridged sealing surfaces
If one of the selaing surface (most likly the flywheel) is scored / ridged the new seal may not seat properly. Slight adjust of the seal location can assist, or making good of the ridge / scoring.
There is a third that your mechanic made a mess of installing the seal and has damaged it, or that the seal is a very cheap one, but hopefully this isn't the case!!
Cheers,
Alex

Re: Crank Shaft Seal
There should be an o ring as well as the main flywheel oil seal. But has been said, excessive end float or wear are other factors.

Re: Crank Shaft Seal
Seal bought from Brickwerks, assuming they provide genuine VW Parts? Will get an O Ring and see where we go.
