Temp needle

Hi

My temperature needle is just into the red zone and not straight ,in traffic jams it creeps nearer the hot zone...

Is there any way I can make this climb down a bit?

what engine do you have ??


assuming its a petrol water cooled ?

lots of things to check, is your cooling fan coming on ? is the rad hot at the top and the bottom? Is your thermostat stuck half open restricting the water flow, is your coolant level correct, with the correct ratio of antifreeze. is your engine oil to the correct level, fuel mixture, engine ignition timing correct? are you sure the gauge is accurate ? Has it always read high or is it a new problem ?

I'd be inclined to check your temp sender and if the reading is accurate swap your rad fan switch as it's clearly not doing it's job. Our's had started to creep up over the past 3 or so years so (with help) I replaced the radiator ... problem solved. 14 years of what-ever the former owners had put through the system plus nearly 10 years in my hands and we had one VERY heavy and clogged radiator.

it is a dg 1.9 ...I have never heard the fan kick in ,well in fact I did not know there was one....

thanks guys will investigate the fan situation...

If it never gets warm it might be the thermostat not working in the correct way.

no it gets too hot....

I found the fan ,tested it and the two speeds work ,now where in the engine bay are the wires?

or shall I just wire a switch?

What wires are you looking for?
Fan switch is in the rad take the lower grill off to find it try changing it
Coolant temp guage sensor is in the thermostat housing

Thinking about it I do not think the fan has ever kicked in.....

Our's did the same, I sat there in a huge queue in Brittany one friday getting hotter and hotter ... I'd still be there now waiting for the fan as the switch was as dead as a dodo

I replaced my temp sensor whilst doing some fault diagnosis with a GSF item, now the needle sits near the red where before it was bang on middle......

So if replacing the temp sensor maybe there is a supplier who can source an original or a better quality part than the GSF item?
