If it's a 2ltr Aircooled, then it's the CU, the same as mine. I don't know about changing it for a later one though cos they're water cooled and have a radiator at the front and all the associated pipework. When I was first looking for a van I wanted a 2.1, 112 bhp with an auto box, but I got a 2ltr Aircooled instead. With an auto box. And I love it! Air cooled and all that. Never had one before, and the noise and the way it drives and everything is ace, so I'll be sticking with mine for quite a while yet. I did think about fitting a Porsche 911 air cooled flat six in it, but somebody pointed out the cost.......... :D

Generally speaking if you look at an 2.0L air-cooled T25 engine it will have the CU code. However my previous camper was a 1980 2.0L a/c with a 1988 unleaded petrol engine which had a CV code. This had been fitted as a genuine VW replacement engine. Most CV engines were fuel injected & were fitted to US spec Vanagons but you might just find one in the UK fitted with the usual UK spec twin carbs. :)

VW no longer do these engines so you will need to get one off a scrapper or an engine rebuilder. may be vege/remtec. Heat exchangers are prone to rot and cost a small fortune. Thermostats are also not available and you need to bobble one from a beetle or bay. People have put water cooled into air cooled. reequires an extra hole cut in the front for the Rad.
