OK peeps, after after what seemed like typing a chapter of War and Peace I previewed my post and tried to delete an extra comma....all my text disappeared forever. So here it goes again and maybe a bit shorter this time.
At the weekend I purchased a 1990 1.6TD California Westfalia, I had done a lot of searching and homework and to say I was happy would be an understatement. I drove it from Fife back down to Newcastle and seemed to drive quite well. The exterior and interior seemed in great condition but with a few bits and pieces requiring attention, as we all know from 20 odd year old campers - the nature of the beast as they say.
My first job was to avoid getting speeding tickets and fix/replace the speedo cable, so on Sunday morning I removed the instrument dash to have a look at the job in hand. Well it was a bit messy behind there, rev counter falling off, brackets snapped and a good few wires going nowhere and the blue ribbon wiring looked fresh out the eighties....of course. I jumped straight on the net to see how much a new/second hand one would be, not many about and also a bit pricey....some repairs to do here me thinks.
Anyway put it all back and tried to start her up....turning over but no cigar. I am fairly handy so started my diagnosis. Fuel? it has. I checked the glow plugs next...fuse ok relay clicking and a voltage getting to the glow plugs. I took one out however and it did not glow and looked canny old. I have ordered a new set which I will put in at the weekend.
1st question. With no heat at the glow plugs stop the camper from starting full stop? It was quite a warm day and she was not even close to starting.
Next thing (should have been first perhaps) was the injector pump and fuel to the engine. I removed a fuel line directly from the pump and cranked her over again. Not much fuel coming out, certainly not injecting more like a splutter, a few ml at most at each turn.
2nd question. How much fuel should I expect from the pump when it is turning over?
I checked the solenoid cut off and it clicked when 12 volts applied straight to it (also clicked when key turned) The only thing I have done is look at and disconnect wires from the instrument panel and put the back.
3rd question. Is there any electrical reasons why the pump would not pump fuel to the engine.
If anyone has any ideas or advice it would be most welcome.

Why be normal if you can be happy.
