Adding new gearbox/starter earth strap

Post by MidLifeCrisis »

Following the fun and games of my gearbox front mount bolt falling out and the gearbox being held on by the ground strap - I thought now might be a prudent time to add another ground strap at the starter motor.

I am thinking that I'll attach one end of the strap to the upper starter mounting bolt at the engine end.
But my question is: Where have folks taken the ground strap to? Is there a particularly convenient place to mount the strap to the van? Looks like it might be easy to drill a hole in the engine bay wall and mount a bolt there but is that the best place?

Anyone done this and come up with a good solution? (maybe with exciting pics?) :ok

I did exactly that.....top starter motor mounting bolt to the chassis leg...can't remember just where but I didn't drill any holes just used one that was there....bared back to shiny metal then painted once the strap was fixed.
Make sure you use a braided strap that can withstand some movement.

Mmmm - chassis leg seems like a more 'sturdy' option.
I ended up mounting to the engine bay wall but it doesn't have that nice 'solid' feel that I'd like for an earth point ....
... maybe I'll try moving it to the chassis leg as you described.

Thanks for the info.
