Engine out time
Well, my repair to the threads on the head (exhaust stud) has failed
I have decided it is time to take the engine out and see if I can get a better repair, but I am preparing to replace the head - just in case. My main concern is that I don't want to damage the liner seal
Tough if I do. Anyway, if it all goes t!t$ up I am going to replace the engine then have this one reconditioned at my leisure.

do you mean the lower barrel/liner seal? if so you should replace it, don't try putting it back with the old seal.
You can slide the barrel up to get at the gudgeon pin without removing it from the piston hence you don't need to worry about getting the rings back in.
personally I'd do both heads while the engine is out.

Re: Engine out time
Thanks for advice. It would appear to be possible to get the holes for the studs welded up and then re drilled and tapped. Hence the heads stay put. Anyway, the engine is out
No great problems, just had the wife to help so all is well
Fingers firmly crossed.
I have an engine or just a head lined up if the need arises so should be back on the road soon

Re: Engine out time
Cant you just drill out and tap for a helicoil insert? or is this what has failed?

Re: Engine out time
Just typed a long reply then lost internet connection.
So, briefly. Daughter has camera in Spain
Will try to borrow one. Hole has been 'repaired' one too many times. Engineer will try to plug/weld it then drill and retap. Spare head available if not succesful, engine sourced if it all goes t!t$ up. Thanks to all of you who've pm'd, rung and answered on here
Watch this space. btw, backs killing me this morning

Re: Engine out time
Just got it dropped off at the engineers. Well, at 5:00pm actually. The engineer who is sorting it was out. I've asked them to do all 8 whilst engine is out and to skim the downpipe/manifold to head. I'm reckoning on around £200 to £250 but I could be in for a shock
At least the cleaning and painting off the engine bay is out of the way now. I forgot to get the bloody small hoses though
. Never mind, got a free morning tomorrow.

Re: Engine out time
In brief: Engine ready to collect (I was at a funeral today so couldn't collect it this afternoon). Total cost for sorting 8 exhaust studs, skimming face on downpipes and hire of trailer = £120
Well chuffed.

Made a lot of progress since I collected the engine yesterday. All finished
I need to put some antifreeze in, didn't want to do it 'til I checked for leaks - A/F is bloody expensive.
