Am I setting Electrical Ignition Timing Right

Post by Albatross »

After fitting new fuel pump to solve fuel in oil prob (thanks all for advice) yesterday tried resetting Ign timing on the old 2lt cu engine (1981) warmed up 15 mins. Idle stabilizer plugs joined together, both vac pipes on dizzy (as Haynes manual). Started and 580rpm at 10 degrees ATDC tick over (using borrowed snap on timing light). After moving dizzy and setting tick over 830/850rpm at 4/6 degrees ATDC - OK. Reconnected stabilizer/adjusted tick over 850-900. Timing went to 18/20 degrees BTDC ? Is stabilizer working or faulty? Took advance pipe off dizzy - no difference at tick over - so assume throttle basic setting must be near right. Took vac pipes off dizzy and sucked each and advance/retard plate moves OK. Restarted - tick over Q well. On sorn so only took it 200yds up estate road/ rev in first - no popping on shut down ! tried again seems OK. Neighbour said no popping but i'm still not sure if its right? As the stabilizer unit advances/retards timing for stable idling does the cu engine actually run at 4-6 ATDC with the stabilizer unit connected? Not been on the road this year - any help/advice please ?

The tick over must be adjusted with the stabiliser disconnected otherwise the stabiliser will try to readjust it.

you join the two plugs together on the idle stabilizer unit the black plugs fit easaly togheter just done mine 1600ct hall ignition as per book take your time its very sensitive to dist movemnts 4/6deg ATDC a tip use seperate 12v battery for the strobe for better results as per sarrans very good utube post
let us know how it goes :ok

Thanks all for advice. Had another go at setting up today as info. Stabilizer disconnected/plugs joined and vac pipe on dizzy - 850/870 rpm and 4-5 ATDC, seems OK. Advance pipe off diz - no difference at tick over - reconnected. Retard pipe off dizz - 1600 rpm and 8 BTDC at tickover. Stabilizer reconnected/both vac pipes on 950/980 rpm and 10-12 BTDC. Rev to 3000+ get up to 40 BTDC. Quick run up road, easily gets to dots on speedo, bit of smoke behind/could just be standing/setting up ? no popping/back firing on changing down. Fairly steady at tickover. Assume its OK ?
