Hi all,
I need to repair my gear linkage due to excessive movement and on investigating what parts I need, I have discovered that i have a 5speed linkage arrangement on the gear stick on a 4speed box.
So wondering whether I can just refurb the 5speed linkage arrangement and continue using it on my 4 speed box? Or am I better of changing the linkage to 4 speed to match the box?
Cheers

Re: Using a 5 speed linkage on a 4 speed gear box?
obviously you can use the 5 speed stick and front linkage with the 4 speed but the 5 speed stick is overly complicated and prone to wear and damage compared to the 4 speed one so if you can find a 4 speed gearstick, box under the stick and front half of the linkage and refurb that if necessary you will have a nicer simpler shift with a lot less to go wrong and peeps will buy the 5 speed stick and linkage in a trice
there's an extra piece in the 4 speed gearbox that governs the gear selection and that is fighting to some extent with the 5 speed stick which may have contributed to the wear - if the van is petrol a 4 speed box of the correct ratio is fine, only the TD really benefits from the 5 speed box imho

Cheers for the quick reply, I've got a 1.9 1Y Diesel engine as the original 1.6 D gave up a couple of years ago,and from what I could make out on the gearbox it's an ABH, although almost worn off!
I will have a look into souring the 4 speed parts and compare costs, thanks again for the info.

ABH is the 1.6TD 4 speed box should be fine on the 1Y ratio wise as it has the long 4th gear
