water warning light

1986 petrol T25 dg engine. Warning light stays on - water in engine is hot but radiator is cold - new water pump fitted two years ago. Can any body help, we are due to go on holiday to-morrow lunchtime (29thJuly)

Maybe a Knackered thermostat , not opening when hot .

yes..thermostat.
easily changed, no need to drain the system.
plastic thermostat housing... undo the four screws and lift the lid.
remove the stat and replace, don't forget the o ring goes on top of the stat.

I have not looked at the later type housing ( plastic type ) but it is usually possible to remove the thermostat and run without. This will at least get you back on the road for your holiday,

Maybe someone else will confirm that it will be possible on your type.

if not I have heard about people cutting the bellows part of the stat off, so that the bottom part can be refitted , if its required for sealing purposes. Obviously if you can get to a motor factors then just buy a new one, about a tenner.... same as a Golf I believe ??

The thermostat is there to promote faster warm up of engine , and less fuel consumption when cold, in this weather you will be fine , mine was stuck open for a year before I replaced it.

Dont risk driving with it stuck closed, very bad things will happen to your engine

Why not simply replace it with a new one ? Just as easy while you're taking the top off the stat housing.

Dont risk driving with it stuck closed, very bad things will happen to your engine
