Please give views on different way to fit longer rear studs?

Post by grace72 »

Just putting this out there!

I have some original Passat 7spokes 16 inch ET37 7J wheels and I need to fit longer rear studs (according to TheSamba wheel fitting thread I need 45mm studs http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=203519" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

I don't have a hydraulic press and annoyingly nowhere so far will fit the studs, apart from Gasure who are so busy I'll be waiting months to get these fitted :(

Soooo, What if after taking the drums off i loosely fit the original wheels onto the new studs and tighten them enough so they butt up to the spline (so as not to damage the threads) but the nuts are tight-ish to the wheel, so they are presumably lined up straight. I then carefully hammer the studs into the drum bit by bit in circular succession and perhaps retighten the nuts as I go along. This to me sounds like a plan, do you think this would work?

Anyone want to tell me off for being overly optimistic

when I did mine I hammered (brass) them in...gently....and used the wheel (I think) to keep them square.

pretty sure I followed a guide off here or brickyard...

Cheers Keith. On further reading 7.5 turns (roughly 11mm of thread) seems to be enough for secure fitment, so I've just fitted them straight on the rear at mo and will get some 40mm conversion bolts and nuts and a 10mm spacer for the fronts tomorrow. I'll keep an eye on them and torque em up again in a few miles.

heres the link..... point 12 is the important bit.

I remember reading a bit from BW about fitting the rear studs, that said DONT PULL THEM THROUGH WITH A WHEEL NUT. It will strip the threads... I used the adapter spacer with them all ready in, expensive but so much less work.
