Hot starting!

Post by wobbly »

This is the sort of question that will probably have hundreds of you groaning but (and yes,i have read the wiki..!) i've got a bit of a problem with starting when the engine is hot. Not always, just now and again but then i've only had the camper for two weeks and it is my first. My van is a watercooled 1915 petrol (1985) running on LPG. It always starts and runs well from cold but when i've done a few short journeys around town it will just refuse point blank to start. I have found that leaving it to cool by opening the engine bay (and wiggling the wires cuz i'm very technical) it will then restart. What's all that about???
I've noticed JK do a relay in their catalogue (J12928) which is supposed to "alleviate hot starting problems" but has anyone used one and is there a more obvious cause? Discuss....

Hot Starting!

FROM VW MANUAL:-

Starting A Hot Engine.

Depress accelerator pedal fully before operating starter & hold in this position - do not pump it.
Release pedal as soon as engine starts.

Hope this helps. :ok

me little problem...ahem!

Post by wobbly »

thanks for that but does that apply to LPG because i've been told that there is no choke function with LPG as the only part of the carb being utilised is the throttle. That would make the foot down start business redundant surely? I am more than happy to give it a go tho', hell i'm always up for anything!! (I've just remembered that's what got me in trouble last time.....oops) wobbly

Sorry Wobbly - I didn't realise that there is no choke once a petrol engine is converted to run on LPG.

Dave,
Not 100% on this but does LPG need petrol to start?

Had similar problem with ours although it is a DJ, the sender for the 'choke' was not working. Always thought it needed it when it didn t.
Would leave for 10 mins and it would start.

Can only think that your choke is comming on all the time.

I am not by any means technical minded so could be totaly wrong.

Cheers Bowton lad, thanks for the suggestion.

Andy...good point. This is my first experience with LPG so it's all new to me. What i do know is that it starts first time on LPG and does not require the acc pedal to be touched at all. The LPG fitter told me not to depress it until after it had started. Had the plugs out today for a full service and it is running ace. It hasn't refused to start since the service but i'm not holding my breath! The point about the choke being on all the time is interesting and not something i'd considered but i will investigate. Did a full coolant fill today and had to put the bugger up two feet at the front on the ramp! Strange business this VW ownership but i'm sure i'll get used to it. Just got to fix the horn, washers, blower motor, headlight and fridge and we're home and dry.......sheesh!!

Dave,
Thats a small list compared to some!
The horn could be a wire in 1 of 3 places, first there is a metal ring under the steering whell that has a bent bit that makes contact onto the metal ring on the steering wheel, if thats not touching then the horn wont work.
Down on the steering column there is also a earth wire on a spade, this sometimes comes off or gets busted.
The last is the 2 wires underneath the van that come off the horn they sometimes bet corroded.
The blower, could it be just the switch on the dash, the switch is the same as Golfs etc of the same vintage or even a new switch is I think about a fiver, worth trying first.
As for the rest fuses, relays?

More than welcome to pop over if you want a hand or second set of eyes etc. :D

happen!

Post by wobbly »

Cheers andy. Sorted the headlight and the fridge today, together with a thorough cleanup underneath. Good advice on the Brick-yard site about areas to jetwash. Washed curtains are back in...i feel a run to the lakes coming on next weekend. Stripped the horn switch, steering wheel and column today, cleaned everything with contact cleaner then wet-dry and finally ACF50 before reassembly. The bloody horn still won't work (and i did bend the contact up to the ring) so i cleaned up th horn contacts...nothing. Thinking maybe the unit is buggered,i'll take it off and test it. Washers may be blocked. I've changed all the fuses (early ceramic type) so they're good to go. Relays (the ones i've found!!) seem okay so far. Hey,at least i'm not bored to death,i used to own a diesel Focus. Now THAT'S tediously reliable!

Monday...ran around great all day,got two new front tyres and sorted one or two other bits out then...BAM! Or rather no bam, cuz the bugger refused to start again when hot. Wait twenty minutes and all's well. On the phone to JK's ordered a hot start relay, coil, HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm and electronic ignition unit. I WILL FIND THE PROBLEM!! Any thoughts anyone...... :(
