Engine/gbox bulkhead heat n sound deadening.

Post by waltraud »

There was a heat and or noise barrier about 3/4 inch thick on the diagonal bulkhead above the gbox bellhousing on my 83 dg westy. I want to replace it but not sure what with?it crumbled ad died. Not sure quite how hot it gets there and whether combustion or melting of materials is possible. Possibilities are closed cell foam, silver foil heat insulation or I was thinking flashing tape then closed cell foam then foil covered bubble wrap?? As ever I would appreciate your thoughts.

get one from a breaker van?

when my gearboax was out a couple of weeks ago I thought i'd take this out and treat any rust, after about 5 minuites I got so much dirt in my eyes I decided I wouldn't bother and just cut away about an inch from the edges so I can treat any rust with it in place.

I doubt you would change one with the gearbox in :D

There is a product of the same type for boats engine boxes but it is bliddy expensive.
Like these:

&
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOAT-MARINE-C ... 0968621104
I had some that was also lead lined and that really killed the noise.

Just a thought Waltraud......

I took mine out last week when fitting rear seat belts, it was held in place with a (rusty!) wire frame thingy. Seems to me it's a potential rust trap, and the shiny panel revealed underneath the insulation was spoilt by the beginning of rust where the panel meets the chassis (hidden by the insulation)... so fettled the rusty bit and will be oil/wax treated this week.

With the tent stashed under the rock 'n roll bed it was quieter than with the insulation panel fitted, so I figure insulating on the inside will be as good as previously, without the rust trap.

Thanks. I did same rust treatment and what you say makes sense. I was even considering doing both sides!
